Chris Groves

Chris Groves
Ron Gordon | Ami Burns
Born in Gosport, Chris Groves followed in his father’s footsteps into the Royal Navy after completing his A-levels. He went straight into officer training at Dartmouth, after which he spent a year doing fleet time before deciding to join the Submarine Service.

Returning to his home town in 1989, Chris joined HMS Dolphin for the Warfare Officers’ Training Course, where he later returned to train others. After completing the Advanced Warfare Course, Chris became an Officer in charge of Sussex University Royal Naval Unit.

Completing the Perisher course in the early 2000s, set Chris on a path to the top. An executive officer on HMS Tireless, they were the first submarine to do a live firing of the Spearfish Torpedo, and Chris went on to have his first Commander role in 2004.

He went on to become Senior Maritime Lead in 2006, completed a Masters in Defence Studies, and then joined Chiefs of Staff Secretariat, with the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall.

In 2012, Chris Wrote the first Royal Navy People Strategy and was the Captain responsible for all sea and shore training in Faslane. He was responsible for SETT between 2012-2014 and now works in private industry.

Chris has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he shares with us about his time spent in the Submarine Service.
