Ami Burns

Lieutenant Ami Burns
Chris Groves | David White
Ami’s fascination with engineering started at an early age, fixing broken lamps, bikes and even her computer.

She joined the Royal Navy as an Artificer Apprenticeship in 2012 was selected for promotion from the Ranks to become a Commissioned Officer.

Ami went on to become one of the first three female Marine Engineer to go through the Submarine Service’s training programme in the UK and one of the first working onboard what had previously been a male-only environment.

Her passion and dedication to expanding her already extensive knowledge on the subject of nuclear submarines has led to Ami most recently being selected for promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

As Ami is currently serving, some parts of our discussion have been redacted. Despite that, we’re pleased to be able to share many snippets from our fascinating and insightful conversation with Ami.
