About the Submariners' Stories project
Submariners’ Stories is an Oral History project instigated by Gosport Borough Council‘s High Street Heritage Action Zone to highlight strong relationship between Gosport and the Submarine Service.
Meeja were commissioned to capture the memories of a range of Submariners, recorded for the benefit of current and future generations – all made possible by funding from Historic England.
Many people and organisations were involved in the creation of this project. It would not have been possible without the support of the Gosport branch of the Submariners’ Association, in particular Ron Gordon.
The Submarine Museum and the National Museum of the Royal Navy were very generous in sharing some of their fantastic collection of historic photos, as were The Gosport Society and many of those who were interviewed. Photographer Julian Winslow was commissioned to shoot the portraits, which were taken at the Museum, in front of the historically-significant HMS Holland I.
