Welcome to the Submariner’s Stories Website
What’s it about?
Submariner’s Stories is an Oral History project focused on Submariners – their lives, experiences and memories.
We’re working with the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Gosport High Street HAZ to mark Gosport’s important link with Submariners.
What’s involved?
At its core it really means us sitting down with Submariners and speaking to them about their lives. These recordings are then gathered together with the others that take part.
We then edit short 1-2 minute sections of them speaking (we call them snippets) that illustrate the themes. We’ve found that this is a great way for those interested to gain an easy way to understand how fascinating the full length Oral Histories can be.
What happens with it?
All of these nuggets are combined with photos from the NMRN archive and any others the submariners might have and formed into a Website, so people using the site get a rounded understanding of what the life of a Submariner was like.
The recordings are also securely deposited to preserve them for future generations.
Portraits
We’re also commissioning a professional photographer to shoot portraits of those who take part.
The project is really about helping the submariners tell their stories and leaving a legacy for their own families, the wider public and those yet to come.

Using words to describe this only gets us so far. It’s far better to have a look at the kind of Website we’ll produce. Farming Memories (link) is a good example – please feel free to have a click around and explore the various sections.
